Abu Obeidah

Viva Palestina and many others around the world are shocked to learn of the killing of Abu Obeidah Omran in Houston, Texas, apparently during a robbery of his grocery store.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife and children at this difficult hour. We send our condolences, too, to the Al Awda, Texas organisation which he built and the broader Palestinian, Arab and Muslim community in the United States within which he was a unique towering, bustling icon.

It is hard to believe that this tall. strong vital man is no longer with us and has, God-willing, departed to the other, better, life.

The last time I saw Abu Obeidah, or Abu as he was known throughout Texas, he had organised a huge car cavalcade for me from Houston Airport to downtown Houston. We were accompanied throughout the procession by motorcycle outriders from the Houston police force, who stopped all traffic for us. I remarked that all the officers were African-American and Abu replied that the whole thing had been possible only through the strong relations he had built with the city's black community.

The welcome was in recognition of February's Viva Palestina convoy into Gaza. During my speech that night news came through about the murderous Israeli attack on the aid ship Mavi Marmara. The first time I saw this gentle giant was through the Viva Palestina USA convoy to Gaza on July 4, 2009.

He had thrown his heart and soul into the convoy and entered Gaza wearing his Stetson, his Texan cowboy boots and with imitation cow horns on his vehicle. He was wearing his trademark red keffiyah - he was a left wing Palestinian first and last - and was received as a hero by the Gazans. On the first day of Ramadan he left a message on my telephone, from Houston, wishing me all the best. By the time I was able to return his call his telephone was answered by someone else and Abu Obeidah was no more.

He was a simply unforgettable character. In 35 years of working in the Palestinian cause I have never come across anyone quite like him. He seemed absolutely unstoppable, a force of nature, a dynamo. Now, as a result of a stupid and petty crime, a robbery of not much I guess, he is gone. Woe is me and all of us. His death tolls for all who loved Palestine, loved justice, loved life.

May God grant him heaven and have mercy on his soul.

Galloway announces new land and sea convoys to break the siege of Gaza

Speaking at a demonstration in London yesterday (5th June) which organisers estimated to be more than 20,000 strong, George Galloway announced  new land and sea convoys to break the siege of Gaza.

"After extensive discussion in Istanbul," said Galloway, "I can announce that a land convoy will leave Britain shortly after the end of Ramadan in September this year and travel through Europe, down through Turkey and Syria into Jordan. We will ask the Egyptian government then to ensure passage from the port of Aqaba to Rafah and into Gaza.

"At exactly the same time a flotilla of boats will be leaving to tour the countries of the Mediterranean before heading for Gaza.

"These combined sea and land convoys will be co-coordinated by Viva Palestina with other organisations in Britain and with our friends throughout the Middle East and in Turkey."

Gaza Flotilla returnees: message from Sarah Colborne from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign

The last 72 hours have been the most harrowing in my life. Even for an experienced campaigner like myself, nothing prepared me for the barbaric onslaught by the Israeli Army on a boat of unarmed peace activists with a cargo of humanitarian aid.

There are images from Monday's bloody attack that will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Yet for all the horrors of the last few days, for all the deaths and injuries, there is one thing that helped me through - knowing that back here in London PSC would be vociferously campaigning on behalf of all the hostages illegally held by the Israeli's.

I will be writing tomorrow at greater length about my experiences, but I wanted every PSC member and supporter to know that your outstanding campaign over the last week is appreciated and I hope to see as many of you as can make it to the demo in central London on Saturday.

The real story from Mavi Marmara: They were shooting to kill

The Israeli massacre of unarmed campaigners aboard a ship carrying aid to Gaza is the "Sharpeville and Soweto of the Movement for Palestinian Solidarity," one of those who survived the bloodthirsty assault has said.

Speaking to the Star from Istanbul shortly after his release from an Israeli jail British campaigner Kevin Ovenden, who was aboard the Mavi Marmara - the boat that bore the brunt of a terrifying raid by gun-toting Israeli commandos - described the attack as a "murderous assault" and "an act of political terrorism."

Israeli security forces stormed the Mavi Marmara in international waters on Sunday night as it ferried 500 unarmed protesters towards Gaza.

The assault killed nine and injured dozens more, sparking worldwide condemnation.

Israel attempted to claim that its shock troops acted in self-defence after coming under attack, blaming the protesters for provoking the situation and being "terrorist supporters."

But Mr Ovenden told the Morning Star: "This was a peaceful humanitarian mission in international waters. The youngest person on board was not yet one, the oldest was 88 years old.

"We had no weapons on board. The Israelis are displaying knives taken from the kitchen. People did defend themselves with whatever was at hand.

"The attack started with percussion grenades and we feared they would use tear gas. The Israeli commandos attacked from all sides and began shooting almost immediately, initially with so-called rubber bullets but certainly within two or three minutes we heard the unmistakable sound of live rounds.

"A colleague from Viva Palestina, Nicci Enchmarch, was next to a Turkish man who was holding a camera. He was shot through the middle of the forehead. The exit wound blew away the back of his skull and she cradled him in her arms as he died."

At least four of those killed were shot through the head, he said.

Mr Ovenden praised the Turkish crew of the vessel as "truly heroic in their attempts to prevent further loss of life," saying they had taken two injured Israeli soldiers inside the ship to prevent them being hurt further in the panic and chaos.

Appeals to the Israeli forces telling them their soldiers were safe and that there were wounded people who needed assistance were ignored, he said.

"Where people had been sleeping was turned into a makeshift triage area. This turned into a makeshift mortuary. Despite repeated requests the Israeli forces refused to evacuate any of the injured for more than an hour.

"I saw severely injured people dragged like sacks of potatoes up the stairwells, their bodies banging against the steel."

Mr Ovenden was transported to BeerSheeva jail where he was held until his eventual release and extradition.

The brutality and degradation continued throughout their ordeal only improving slightly when the British consular official arrived at the prison.

Summing up the horrific events aboard the Mavi Marmara, he said: "This is the Sharpeville and Soweto of the movement for Palestinian solidarity and it must mark a turning point in world opinion and in the actions of governments around the world to end this immoral and illegal siege and the treatment the Israelis mete out to Palestinians.

"We experienced it for 48 hours but they have endured this for 62 years."

Despite the horrific ordeal Mr Ovenden said he would be prepared to make the trip again after the families of some of those murdered asked that their loss not be in vain.
